I walked into the room overwhelmed. I was the youngest in the room, one of just a couple women, and one of the few people of color. How do I relate to this audience? How will they see me? Will my message be received? The weight of that reality pressed on me, but as I stepped onto the stage, I realized there was no escape.
I took a deep breath and affirmed to myself my preparation, my passion, and my calling. The lights were bright, the applause had quieted, and I faced 3,000 executives eager to hear me speak.
I stepped into the spotlight and on that day I guided my audience on a powerful emotion filled discussion — we laughed, cried, shared, listened, and were called to act. That was the moment I transitioned from a passionate talker to a professional speaker.
Here are three key principles that helped me make that leap:
People connect more deeply with realness than perfection. It’s easy to step in front of a crowd and try to appear polished, unaffected, or flawless. But when you speak authentically — sharing both your successes and your challenges — you create connection.
Audiences don’t just relate to triumphs; they relate to adversity. Being willing to share your struggles makes your message resonate, builds trust, and breaks down barriers between you and your listeners. Preparation is crucial, but authenticity is what makes your message relatable.
A powerful message requires a clear framework. Structure keeps your talk organized, makes it easier for the audience to follow, and ensures your key points land. At Speak Like a Pro Academy, we teach narrowing your points of emphasis so your audience can retain and apply them.
Start by getting your audience on board — show them why your message matters, why it’s relevant to their current circumstances, and how it impacts them. Use story, examples, or a bold statement to draw them in. Then, provide your points of emphasis, building clarity and flow. Finally, close with a call to action that inspires transformation.
Your audience should experience your message, not just hear it. Make it personal, relational, and meaningful. Use pauses, stories, examples, and emotional cues to bring your points to life.
When your audience feels the message in their hearts as well as their minds, action becomes inevitable. Transformation happens when people see their role in applying your message.
These three elements — authenticity, structure, and emotional connection — are what transformed me from a rambler to a professional speaker and can elevate your speaking as well.
